What Level is my Child?
USCF Ratings
At Steiner Ranch Chess, we do not use USCF (US Chess Federation) ratings. With our small class sizes, we get to know each and every one of our students and pair them with opponents both similar in level and with those who will challenge them, as well.
We have students who are quite competitive, but we also have students who come to play for fun. While a rating can provide a gauge to progress, we feel that for young children who want to play recreationally, it could also become a deterrant. We strive to foster the love of the game, so that students will continue their chess journey for a long time to come.
We encourage students to practice outside of class both over-the-board (OTB) and online. Online platforms (such as chess.com and lichess.org) can give ratings that, while not aligned with USCF, can provide a gauge as to how a child is improving.
Levels
We use a basic system to set the level for our classes. Level 1's and Level 2's.
Level 1's are our students who are still working towards their first independent Checkmates without the help of a friend, parent or teacher. They are at the Beginner level.
Our Level 1 classes will progress at a slower pace, with more emphasis on the basics in openings, some tactics and basic Checkmate patterns. Puzzles will focus on 1-2 moves each.
Level 2's are those students that have already started to consistently secure independent Checkmates. They range from Beginner, Novice to Intermediate in level.
Our Level 2 classes are tailored and personalized to the specific students who are signed up. They will focus on more advanced openings, tactics and Checkmates, while delving into a more strategic and competitive game. Puzzles will become more challenging as well, and will expand into several moves.
